let’s talk

the power of language
According to the 2025 Anuario del Instituto Cervantes, 520 million people speak Spanish as their mother tongue. Spanish is only second to Mandarin by number of native speakers in the world with more the 24 million people studying Spanish as a foreign language. Spanish holds the third position in the United Nations, and it is the fourth language in European Union institutions. It is also interesting that 87% of the tourists that visit Spanish-speaking countries come from places where Spanish is not spoken.
As regards the United States, it is expected that very soon the US will be the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, right after Mexico.
But while Spanish is a global language with a consistent structure, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary of which the Real Academia Española is responsible of regulating, there are many varieties of Spanish spoken through the world where the accents, choose of words, expressions, colloquialisms, and specially the slang are unique. Language and culture go together, and although everybody who speaks Spanish can understand each other regardless of nationality, each nation has its own particular culture, its own customs, traditions, and specially, its own history. This can be extremely frustrating to you as a Spanish language learner. But it can also be quite fun if you think of yourself as a language investigator trying to solve the mystery of what people are traying to say.
