the power of language
According to the 2025 Anuario del Instituto Cervantes, 520 million people speak Spanish as their mother tongue. Spanish is second only to Mandarin in terms of native speakers worldwide. In addition, more than 24 million people are studying Spanish as a foreign language. Spanish is the third most usted language in the United Nations and the fourth language in European Union institutions. It is also noteworthy that 87% of the tourists who visit Spanish-speaking countries come from places where Spanish is not spoken.
In the United States, it is expected that, in the near future, the country will become the second-largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world, after Mexico.
However, while Spanish is a global language with a largely consistent structure, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary—regulated by the Real Academia Española—there are many varieties spoken throghout the world. Accents, choose of words, expressions, colloquialisms, and especially the slang vary widely.
Language and culture are closely connected. Althought Spanish speakers can generally understand one another regardles of nationallity, each country has its own culture, customs, traditions, and history. This can be frustrating for Spanish learners, but it can also be enjoyable if you approach it line an investigator, trying to uncover what people are really saying.
