HOW TO LEARN SPANISH AND STICK AT IT

  • Approach the task of learning Spanish as project that will take time and dedication. Learning a new language is a long time process. Set up your goals and be realistic. If you want to learn Spanish just because you are visiting a Spanish speaking country for two weeks and would like to be able to communicate with local residents, that’s not going to happen. During the Beginners course you will learn some vocabulary, will start getting trained in good pronunciation, and learn the ABC’s of grammar that will allow you to express basic ideas in the present tense. But there is much more to learning the language. it’s important to understand the the Beginners course is just the first step on the journey.
  • Enjoy the pleasure and sense of achievement you get from learning new words, grammar, and being able to start expressing yourself in your new language.
  • Explore different tools to get exposed to the language. Movies, podcasts, and music are great tools for learning Spanish. They improve listening and speaking, teach you new words and phrases, and show you how the language sounds and is used in real life situations.
  • Think of ways to immerse yourself into Spanish. Whether by talking to yourself, or keeping a diary or notebook in Spanish will keep you motivated to look for new words and ways to express yourself.
  • Make the most out of your travelling to Spanish speaking countries by  avoiding the so call “tourists traps” where everybody speaks English. Experience the local culture. The most rewarding interactions you’ll have are from situations where Spanish is the only option.

EXPERIENCE THE CULTURE

EL ZOCALO, Mexico City.

Zócalo is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City. Prior to the conquest by Spain, it was the main ceremonial center in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán. The plaza used to be know simply as the Plaza Mayor (“Main Square”) or Plaza de Armas, (“Arms Square”), and today its formal name is Plaza de la Constitución (“Constitution Square”).

El Zocalo has been a gathering place for Mexicans since Aztec times, having been the site of Mexican ceremonies, military parades, Independence ceremonies, and modern religious events such as the festivals of Holy Week and Corpus Christi. It has received foreign heads of state and is the main venue for national celebrations, national protests, and even for street vendors, as we see here. The site is just one block southwest of the Templo Mayor, which, according to Aztec legend and mythology, was considered the center of the universe.
